I have never hunted hogs in TX before and I am going to be in the Santa Anna area March 26th through 29th. We have a trap and some tower blinds with lights. Any pointers to help out a TX hog hunter newbie? Does anyone know the area? Are there any other critters in season that time of year besides porkers?

Any input is much appreciated!!!

A local bar would be nice too : - )

That area of TX has a good amount of hogs now, some places have more than others. 10 years ago there were few if any in most areas in Coleman Co. that I know of. Hunting at night you might see some varmits if your interested in a fox, coyote or bobcat which are legal game. You will probably see lots of deer. Coleman Co. has great deer hunting, if you ever get the chance to deer hunt that area, jump on it. There are some nice bucks in those parts. As far as bars go, you'll have to go to Coleman or Brownwood, Santa Anna is real small.

No local bars west Texas is dry.

I hunt west of there on a good sized ranch near Valera a couple weeks every year. Big whitetail, but Ive never seen a hog out there. Plenty rattle snakes though.

Don't know much about Texas or Hogs but that's why I joined this site. I'd love to head down there and hunt hogs. Are they a separate species of pig or are they hogs that one time left the farm and ended up wild?

jekemi, most of the wild hogs in TX are hybids with very little European mixed in, feral hogs are different than domestic hogs in that they are more muscular and have less fat

And sometimes a worse attitude. Ihave heard from several people that the ferals have a worse temperment than the true Russins. They have also said they are meaner, and have kinda found that out the hard way, or at least close too anyways.
