On our way to the World Expo we stopped in Kansas at a friend of Rod Haydel’s “cabin” to spend the night and get in some predator hunting. The so-called cabin would be a place of leisure to most of us. Awesome scenery, lots of critters and good food cooked by the friend, Mark. We stopped in again on the way home. Mark was very hospitable. Of course we talked lots of hunting. He said he had always wanted to kill a hog and had hunted them in Arkansas and Oklahoma 5 times. I told him to come on down to Texas and we would try and get him a hog. He wanted to kill one with a Smith and Wesson 500.

Well he finally came down yesterday for an evening hunt. We started earlier than we usually do and I really doubted we see a hog for a couple of hours, but figured we better give it a whirl. We hiked down a wooded trail towards an over grown pecan grove. We had gone about a half mile when I heard hogs on the far side of the grove. We eased in quietly in towards the hogs and spotted a nice big boar breeding a sow. Mark knelt down steadied on his shooting stick and shot at the boar through some thick stuff. It was obvious he had hit the boar, but he took off like a streak of lightening. We found blood right away and trailed him much further than I thought he would have gone. About 600 yards from where he was shot, Mark jumped him up about 2 feet in front of him. I hollered to Michelle who was standing on a private road through the place that he was headed her way. We heard a shot and went to see. She said a buck had run out of the thicket and was slippin’ and slidin’ trying not to run over her just then the boar stepped out, she shot him in the neck and down he went.

Mark headed home shortly after and Michelle and I did some night hunting. We saw a huge group of hogs with several monster boars in the group Michelle picked one out that was one of the biggest I have seen and waited for her shot. In case you’ve never seen a group of hogs they never stop moving it’s like giant ants. Anyway she took her time to make a clean head shot and just as she squeezed the trigger a smaller hog ran between her and the big boy and took a .308! She wasn’t very happy to say the least.

This evening we killed 2 more hogs just before dark.
