Well I decided if I was going to get to use my new Icon in .308 again or even get to kill a hog, I was going to have to sneak off without Michelle to do it. So when Michelle was too sleepy to hunt {rare but it happens} I took advantage of the situation and told her I was going to spotlight for hogs. At the first place I saw a group of about 20 hogs. They spooked a bit and started for the brush covered hill. I picked out a nice boar and squeezed the trigger on the .308 for a Texas heart shot {works well on most hogs generally dropping them right there}. The air was so cold and damp it looked like I was shooting a black powder gun. The hog squealed and turned. I followed him and fired again he stumbled and dropped off into a creek and headed for thick brush, where I heard him crash. I then realized my kids had borrowed my flashlight. So I had to let him lay till the next day. I then drove to the place where Michelle and I saw the huge boar Sunday night. Right off I found him with a big group of hogs and the other boar that he kept whooping was there also. They were milling around at about 200 yards, a 100 yards further than I had practiced with the .308, but I had to give it a try. The big boy wasn’t offering a shot, which probably saved me a divorce, but the other boar, which is about 50-100 pounds lighter, was offering a shot! A sow moved his way and he mounted her. I aimed a little high on his neck and squeezed a round off. I heard the distinct sound of a bullet hitting meat, but when the smoke cleared I couldn’t see anything except running hogs. I followed the hogs and another good boar offered a shot, but he was mingled in with cattle and I had to pass. So I looked for the others. I spotted a few sows running for thick cover and picked a nice colored sow out and tried another Texas heart shot. I heard the smack again and again saw no hog go down. I was feeling a bit down thinking I had just lost 2 good hogs. I drove back to where I shot at the big boar and as soon as I entered the pasture I could see something lying right where they had been when I shot. It was the big black boar DRT! It took me forever to get him loaded by myself, but I got it done. Then I went back to where I shot the sow made 3 passes and there she was laying in the tall weeds, I was happy now!

It was now 3am and I had a long day of work coming up, so I headed home. The next day about 6pm and after work Michelle and I headed out again. She wanted to hunt while I looked for the hog I lost the night before. I walked right to him, took pictures and went to check out another area that I hadn’t hunted in a year or so. I wasn’t hearing any hogs and the cover was really thick. My phone rang and I took the call, it was a farmer wanting me to come kill hogs at his place an hour and a half away, he said they were tearing him up. I told him it would be next week, I hung up and headed back towards the truck as the light faded. Just then I heard what I thought was a buck grunting {I had heard 2 bucks fighting a little earlier} I turned to look back just in time to see a hog come out of the brush. I centered the crosshairs on her neck and dropped her right there. By the time she stopped kicking there was another hog standing there! It was dark but I could make out the shape of the hog good enough to aim center mass, squeezed the trigger the hog dropped and I realized I was out of ammo! So I headed for the truck and ran into another hog on the way! Michelle wasn’t too happy with me for killing five hogs in two days when she didn’t get one! She’ll be taking my .308 away again!
