We have a trap at our spot that the landowner purchased just for us to use. Problem is, it has a steele cable that connects to the spring door. I have set the trap but the hogs just come in and devour my corn and never trip the trap. It is very hard to trip it when we tested the trap. What must I do? Or what am I doing wrong???? Help me outhttp://texashoghunter.com/images/images/forum/emoticons/think.gif guys.

Does it stay open with some kind of stick or rod that holds the doors open?

Not knowing anything about the trap that you have; A common problem with the small varmint traps that are tripped by the critter stepping on a cantilevered platform (usually screen or wire mesh), is that the operator places the bait on top of the platform that trips the door. In susch a situation, the critter gingerly eats the bait without applying enough weight/pressure to operate the trap.

The resolution is to place the bait under the trap. This frustrates the critter trying to get to it and starts a frenzy of scratching and pounding on the (trigger).

The mistake that is commonly made, is the operator treats the trap as if it were a feeder. The purpose of the bait is not to feed the critter - it is to get him to enter.

If the critter enters and the bait is readily available, the critter relaxes and just enjoys the buffet - then gingerly leaves - likely after tipping <heehee> (if you find cr*p in the trap).

If the animal senses the delicious meal inside, then looses his mind trying to get to the goods, he is apt to forget any previous inhibitions of entering the trap and act without abandon (to his demise).

That is thetheory, anyway.

Hi Squirt,

Yeah, but did my comments make in sense in regard to your application of the trap?

Inquiring minds want to know.

Hey squirt, that is the same type of trap we have. Put the corn under the cable. If they can throw around a pipe with 50lbs of corn they can trip that wire to get the corn under it. When we go out there I can take a look. Nice talking to you today on the phone. Calebhttp://texashoghunter.com/images/images/forum/emoticons/mrgreen.gif

TRIGGER... what is on the end of the cable? Not the door dummie the other end... I had a 16 inch piece of metal tubing, EMTconduit, it went to either "trigger prong" stays made to the floor or I would drive rebar in the ground and with door open I place the tubing so each end is held by the trigger prongs. A thin coat of corn on the ground early in the trap with a pile behind the trigger. The distance has to be far enuff that front legs must bump tube to reach pile. When you set it, you decide how light or tight the trigger is by where you put the tube. I put it at the tips of the prongs to make a "hair trigger". With enuff random corn before the trigger you increase the chances at a multi catch. I have had 4 on more than one occasion... If this doesn't work, Pin the door open and keep corn in it. Doing this for a week or more then re-set the door you increase the chance at a breeder size big hog.
