Hey guys, I had the opportunity to hunt with Cody and Mark (herefishy) a few days ago down at Granger (centeral Texas). I was wondering does anyone else wanna join us out there for a hunt? It is bow only and you will have to wear hunter's orange. We could split up into groups of two and hit several different spots. If interested, you must possess an AHP ($48 dollars) and be ready for a long walk. We can create teams and the team that pops a pig, I will give up 100 points (my points) to the team. Plus you get bragging rights. Who's game?http://texashoghunter.com/images/images/forum/emoticons/salut.gif

I hope the USDA helicopter control kill doesn't get the sow that I've been stalking since october.

Last month she laid down 30 yards from me and started feeding piglets. Couldn't get a shot.

Wow Mark, those pics came from your cam? Dude, I saw guys going out there tonight to hog hunt. Spoke with a guy (Wilson) and he said that they have been bowhunting there for 6 years at night. All of the guys had pop-up blinds and says that they never hunt deep at night. They bait, sit at the truck and drink beer, then at a certain hour, they all head in and get a kill EVERYTIME. HUMMMMMMMMMM!http://texashoghunter.com/images/images/forum/emoticons/think.gif

I am certain there are fellows out hunting at night. The regulations are junting 30minutes before and 30minutes after sunrise/sunset.

I'm going to call the office, and see if they really care.

I found this interesting paper/study of the Granger WMA/Central Texas feral hog management situation.

The folks at the Granger WMA/Lake office often seem pretty easy going. When I started hunting out there, I asked if it was required to park in the designated parking areas and enter at the (registration) locations. I was told it was not big deal - you can park on the side of the road and jump the fence.

As such, I thought possibly that hunting at night for hogs wasn't a big deal either - but that wasn't the response that I got from the office - they read the book to me.

For me,the prospect of the ticket is not worth getting a hog.

Mark

Iwould love to hunt with y'all at Granger, but it is going to be awhile yet. Just got out of the hosp for the removal of 2 disc's and fusion of 3 verts in my lower back. Trying to get healed before bow season gets here, and my bear hunt in Maine in Sept. But I definately will do a hunt with y'all at some point.

Mark, I wasn't implying that I would hunt out there at night. I respect the laws that govern the institution of hunting.

Hi Squirt,

I wasn't implying that you would. http://texashoghunter.com/images/images/forum/emoticons/salut.gif

I was responding to (your and mine) observation that possibly there are other folks that DO hunt at night out there. I think that the primary reason for the day-only regulation, is all the land is open to public, so ANYONE could be roaming the property at any time, and night hunting increases the chances of an "accident". Possibly involvingafisherman, I would suppose.http://texashoghunter.com/images/images/forum/emoticons/doh.gif

I am certain that you can night hunt (any legal means)in the National Forests (Grasslands may not be included).

Cheers!

Hey, we're going out there tomorrow evening. What do you have planned??

herefishy
02-14-2009, 03:44 AM
You're going Sunday evening? I'll keep that in mind.

I went last night - until dark. The week before (2nd through the 6th), I went every evening and wore myself out. My wife acts indifferent to my compulsion - but that can mean something else. I'll give you a ring if I'm going.

I was caught a little off guard last time with (4) of us at the site. I am not certain that four fellers trecking shoulder to shoulder is an effective hunting method, maybe I'm wrong. What do you think? Does it matter? Or should (a large party) plan on breaking up in no more than twos or something to increase effectiveness.

Just chatted with Cody. We'll go to #8 again and see what we can find. It doesn't bother me, I just wanna hunt. I dig where you're coming from on the home situation......But for me, thats a hard one: My wife, or my bow.http://texashoghunter.com/images/images/forum/emoticons/think.gifMy bow doesn't talk back or sreams in the middle of the night because the toilet seat was left uphttp://texashoghunter.com/images/images/forum/emoticons/doh.gifI think my bow wins hands down.

The last time I was at #8 me and a buddy of mine saw hogs 4 differnt times for a total of 15 hogs seen that afternoon. 4 hogs damn near ran us over. Hopefully we can find them in the same area again. http://texashoghunter.com/images/images/forum/emoticons/dance.gif

I'm not sure about fishy's "certain in the national forest, you can hunt at night". Ihave talked to both the USFSand the game wardens in and around the Willis, New Waverly area of Sam Houston and they have both told me absoultely no night hunting at all. 30 min's prior to and 30 min's after is the rule. Iwish Icould hunt there at night, they don't usually show until right at dark.

I may stand corrected... i could be wrong (it's happened before http://texashoghunter.com/images/images/forum/emoticons/smoking.gif). But according to the information (link below) the regulations are set by TPWD, and varmint hunting (hogs inclusive) at night is legal:

http://www.fs.fed.us/r8/texas/recreation/sam_houston/hunting_on_samhouston.shtml

?????????????????????????????

But the county limits the varmint hunting, in that area?????? Specificaly in the regulations relating to hunter orange, it states that exemption is for "hunters hunting fur-bearing (varmint) animals at night". As such, there is no expressed regulation against (any) hunting at night. Hunting deer and migratory birds at night is illegal - varmints and hogs at night are permissable.

Only late last month, my son and I did recon out there for Turkeys (does not look like a good prospect), and that was my understanding (at SHNF).

Lotta' hog sign as I scouted the lakeshore at the Archery only area East of the Cagle campground.

That drain off is disgusting over there. All that blue chemical running out of the ground. Have you tried the other side of the bridge yet to the west and also down closer to Osbourne Rd.further west yet? There is a creek the runs under 1375 there, go north a couple of hundred yds and you should be in them. There is easy parking on the south side of the road where the bird watchers have cut all the undergrowth out.

Here's the map of Granger WMA. It shows all of the units and the numbered legal entry points. Also it shows the legal hunting hours at Granger for hogs. Not sure which area yall are talking about at this point as far as the hunting at night goes.

Sorry fish, just hogs. Ihave not seen nor heard a turkey anywhere out there since Ihave been going. They have gotten some more land off that Osbourne Rd that is now NWTF endorsed along with the land near Stubblefieldbut have never seen or found a turkey feather anywhere. According to the warden from that area, the fire ants are killing a majority of the eggs and the rooters get the rest.
