A couple of weeks ago, a rather lively conversation took place about fence hunting, and I have to admit I had never hunted behind a fence. So when I was given the opportunity I jumped on it. Little did I know that it was going to be so much work. I went over to ushogoutfitters training area to see what all went into creating these awesome hunting dogs. And it is a trip! These dogs are exposed to this experience from a very tender age, and it works. It was cool seeing the comparison between how the young pups work and how the refined dogs work. But I do have to say it doesn’t matter how old or young Joe’s style and reinforcement of the dogs’ performance and their training does not change. He treats them all the same and makes sure to reward them for a job well done. (Back to the Hunt) I’m expecting to walk into this pin walk up about 20 yards and take a shot. I was wrong; I must have crossed this pin about twenty times dodging hogs, ducking under foliage, making sure not to take a shot that would cross the fence in the wrong direction.Ever tried to back away from and charging hog and shot a bow at the same time. Well I tried it and the darn thing turned as I shot, but one of us still got hit. I over extended my arm and slapped my forearm with the drawstring of my bow, it tickled ;0). And back across the fenced area we went. Now Joe did help me spot and make sure we were not going to get charge from another direction but that doesn’t mean I didn’t worry. One thing I learned is that in the wild you may only get one shot and you know you’re your hiding spots if you’ve done your home work. But in a fence they know all the spots and are watching you the whole time. We harvested the three hogs running around in the there but I was not easy task. I tell you I never thought I would be able to make a 30 inch vertical in my life again but I swear I was 3-4 feet up the nearest tree in the blink of an eye when I saw those three sows charging Joe, Joey, and me.All in all I had an awesome time and still have a freezer full of meat. Thanks again Joe, I look forward to doing it again real soon. And in the words of the great Hog Killer “USHOGOUTFITTERS BABY THAT’S THE WAY TO GO”……….
