Well it's that time of year again.....time for the 10th Annual Madison County Youth Hunt! It doesn't seem like this is our 10th year, but it is.

For those of you that aren't familiar with the Youth Hunt, I'll give you a little background. We started this program 10 years ago as a way to introduce more kids to the great outdoors and the sport of hunting....after all, the next generation IS our future. Every year we take 16 local area school kids (7th and 8th graders) hunting and camping for a weekend. Each kid has a guide and we provide everything....license, food, lodging (the big tent), guns, ammo and we even pay for all game processing. It's a ball! When it's over, each child gets an equal share of any deer that are harvested....free. For some of these families, a couple of boxes of meat comes in handy this time of year.

As you might guess, these kids can EAT! ....and since we're trying to instill an "outdoor" influence on them, we usually BBQ a wild hog for the Saturday night meal.....that means that somebody has to go kill one. It's a rough job, but somebody has to do it!

We decided that, rather than waiting until the last minute, we would "make a round" on Wednesday night. It didn't take long! We entered the pasture across the road from my machine shop and spotted 8 hogs within 2 minutes. After a 150 yard stalk, we opened up on the group with 2 AR10's (.308)....one with a Gen3 night scope and the other with a thermal weapon sight. Thirty seconds later, we had 7 dead porkers.....plenty for supper Saturday night.

Here's me, MacGyver and Longone with the pile in the back on the RSOV.

And YES...It was COLD (for here at least). We transferred the hogs to Longone's truck and went to the barn to start skinning .

After a little fancy knifework from Longone and MacGyver, we had supper hanging in the walk-in cooler. Talk about FAT !......I don't think this girl had missed many meals!

If they are, it will be their own fault! The menu for Friday night is a venison carne guisada.....and I'm talking about a big pot! (We'll start by cubing up an entire deer). Saturday morning brings breakfast tacos, hot dogs for lunch and two whole hogs for supper.

Somewhere in there we'll slip in some deer hunting!

I LOVE IT! I look forward to this weekend every year.
