i get to sample lots of products and be a part of testing different products, the hottest baits and attractandts i have found are from 2 compaines the first is the in heat scents line of productsm they produce sow in heat, grim reaper various rubs that you apply with a brush to a tree and black gold i have used all of these priducts to take numerous hogs. there is also another tactic i use, on any make boar i shoot i cut the sac around his lower anatomy when you skin him it is where the semen and urine mixes cause a nasty foul odor when a dominate boar hog uses an area he will mark it with this fould odor. causing others to come into an area i freeze this stuff and when im hunting a domnate boar ill run a drag line of sow in heat and hang this sac upwind yeah it stinks but watch the big boys come in

I use several different baits. Corn and strawberry jello is most common. But to keep the 'coons and deer away, I use deisel fuel and corn. I sour corn in a 5 gallon bucket for bout a week and a half, then I add a beer. Dig a 3 foot deep hole and fill it up. cover the hole and pour a little of the soured corn on top. 60-70 yards from your blind (35 if bowhunting) and watch the results. Other sites SWEAR by a product called "BLACKGOLD" I say NAH! I know the ingredients in Black Gold. Save your money. Hogs may eat anything, but getting them in to eat is the trick.http://texashoghunter.com/images/images/forum/emoticons/shhh.gif

I put out a feeder with some corn in it hoping to get the deer into my hunting area. Little did I know that the pigs would take over and run the deer out. Oh well, instead of complaining I just hunted deer in another area of my lease and let the pigs have all the corn they wanted. I killed severalpigs out from under the feederand all I ever used was corn and some strawberry jello. Once they find the feederit's on.

Ihave lost two boars that I shot withmy bow, but my .243 seems to do the trick.I guess I needto work on shot placementwith my arrows.

I like to use Boons Farm when sourring my corn. Then dig a whole about two and a half feet deep. Cover it with about six inches of dirt. I will do this three or four times in one area, it tends to attracked more pigs. Once I have four or five pigs in sight, I am ready to pick one out. I also like to use hog wild and place it over a down tree limb.

I'm using sour corn, a little diesel, and good old "sweet feed". Pour some beer in the whole mix and let it set a week or so...maybe some sour milk added in. Might make some sick to smell it, but works great on the pigs.

i use sour corn or corn mixed with hog wild and sometimes mix the two. they both seem to work for me if the hogs are n the area and coming through. otherwise the coons clean it up.

I have a rubbing post set up close to my feeder. I like to pour a pile of sour corn at the base of the rubbing post then pour Black Gold down the rubbing post then on the pile of soured corn like salad dressing. The first time I did that I had over 600 pics in 4 days. I had a number of pics where there were as many hogs as the little rubbing post than at the feeder. Good stuff!

Actually, Ihunt feeders, trails to feeders or water depending on the season and temp. Ihave seen same day results with black gold and grim reaper.

I had a bunch of hogs coming to my deer feeder. I added strawberry jello and they just flocked in. I shot one night and haven't seen them in weeks. They just flat out dissappeared.
Over a period of time I have added a rubbing post, dug a hole and filled with sour corn, and here recently I put out sow-in-heat.
Still nothing.
No pics on the game cam, no tracks, ....nothing.
I live to hunt pigs. Any suggestions?

They have these for deer. I made these for hogs. The goal is to place the block high enough on a tree so that the hogs can't actually eat it. The block slowly melts in the sun and humidity and drips down the tree. The pigs then lick the tree and/or eat the puddle of sweet stuff and corn on the ground. If you hang it in the shade, the block will last longer. It also will lasts longer in the winter than the summer odviously. They retail for $20.00 at outdoor stores. This one costs around $5.00 and is easily made from things around the kitchen and house.

Recipe

5# Granulated Sugar

5 # Powdered Sugar

1/2 Cup Vanilla

1/2 Cup Salt

1/2 Cup Honey

3 Tbsp. Vegetable Oil

3 # Corn

2 Qts. Water

1 Pkg. Strawberry Powdered Jello

1 Cup Corn Syrup

1 Cup Orange Juice

1/2 Cup Syrup

4 Cups Apple Powder (If you can't find apple powder, you can substitute the water in the recipe with 2 qts. apple juice.)

12 Ft. Weedeater Cord

Pop-out Of Plastic Mold And You're Ready To Go

Instructions

1) Combine apple powder, gelatin, salt, syrup, vanilla, and corn together in a large mixing bowl and mix well. Set aside.

2) Spread a thin layer of vegetable oil inside the plastic containers. Set aside.

3) Cut weed eater cord into 4 foot lengths and set aside.

4) Combine water, orange juice, honey, corn syrup, granulated sugar, and powdered sugar in a large, TALL pot and boil over medium heat WITHOUT stirring until the mixture reaches 303 degrees (http://www.marlinowners.com/forums/index.php/topic,35557.0.html#) F.

5) Turn off heat. Add powdered mixture to pot with wet ingredients and stir well to mix. CAUTION: When you add the dry ingredients, the mixture will begin to foam up and create steam. Make sure you are wearing some sort of glove before adding the dry ing. to the wet.

6) Pour mixture into pre-oiled plastic containers evenly.

7) Submerge middle part of cord into each container.

Let containers cool for 12 hrs until hard and set.

9) Gently stretch out sides of plastic container and the block will pop out. It is now ready to be tied to a tree by your set-up.

The one I bought at the store has lasted so far 6 weeks in the woods. (It hasn't rained alot though). It will be interesting to see how long this block last. Good Luck

Ihave no ties to Black Gold, but I've used it quite a bit and it works well. I put it out with soured corn and had 600 game cam pics in 4 days. Even after the soured corn was gone I had as many hogs lovin it up at the rubbing post as at the feeder. The stuff works.

Vanilla extract works great too!

OK made the hog block. Here is a bit of advise. If you think you have a big enough pot. You dont get a bigger one. Then when you think you have a big enough pot.http://texashoghunter.com/images/images/forum/emoticons/naughty.gif Stop get a bigger one. The stuff boiled into double the size at 295 degrees and then ran out of the pot and all over the stove.http://texashoghunter.com/images/images/forum/emoticons/mrgreen.gifGood news is it actually works as a great cleaner as well. I let the stuff harden up on the stove a bit then scraped it off with a plastic spatula. Pulled up some burn on stains that we have not been able to get off the stove. It was a sticky situation. It is cooling now and has hardened. Should work just fine.

As far as dragging a sac. Well I will stick to corn to bring them in. Guess I am not that dedicated to getting the biggest boar.

Seems like there are 2 different opinions going on here, baits for trophy boars and baits for meat hogs.

I have good luck using sour corn... I add a couple 2 or 3 envelopes of yeast to 50 pounds of corn. Let it go to sour mash for a week in hot weather or 2 weeks in colder weather. I use the water to sling on the trap, the surronding foilage and such. Didn't see an increase in numbers by adding beer and won't use diesel in such a fashion. I will put coon traps out and thin them down if needed. Hammer the coons for a week or 2 and they will not be very bad for a whaile.

Iam new to hog hunting and I was wondering what does the diesel do for the bait? Is it the smell or what?

NelsonV
02-24-2009, 03:58 PM
I believe the smell of diesel is what attracts them. The other good part of using diesel is that the coons and deer are not as attracted to it. Not to say they won't eat it because I have plenty of pictures that shows they will.

Has anyone tried the Tinks "Sow in Heat" yet? Itried it once on my wife's hunt and could not tell if it worked or not. Had a bunch of hogs come to the feeder, but never really noticed if they went to smell the spot Iput it. To concentrated on killing a big one.

We use the sour corn here in the mtns. for bear it works really good. 55 gal. drum 50# corn, yeast and 5-10#sugar. the coons will also SWARM. didnt know the hogs liked it too. hhhmmm. still got about a 1\\2 a barrel left. I read to be careful feeding this to wildlife, it's supposed to cause some kinda (big word) blisters in animals mouths and stomachs.http://texashoghunter.com/images/images/forum/emoticons/eek.gifhttp://texashoghunter.com/images/images/forum/emoticons/whistle.gif. I've been just using corn and plain old grape kool-aid. the hogs came running.

03-01-2009, 09:21 AM
Ihad made a mix several yrs ago that was 2 bags of corn, a 6pack of beer,1 gal milk, a packet of yeast, a small bag of oats and water. After several months of furmenting, it had my gag reflexes working just fine. The hogs went wild, they even dug holes to get after the juice the drained into the soil. After 2 yrs of it in a 55 gal drum, you could not even get close to the barrel without gagging. If it got onto your hands, it had to wear off. Bad stuff, but good with the hogs. Still no reply on the Tinks Sow in Heat yet?

A friend of mine shot a 250lbs boar 2 weeks ago and he is convinced that the boar came in due to the tinks hog in heat that he put out. He thinks so because hehad not been gettingto many pics of hogs at all lately. He does have a few pics of that hog from a few months past. It was the first time he had used it, and the hog came in right at sun down. Coincidence or luck or maybe it really works. I'll be trying it though.

Thanks for the reply Cody. Like Isaid, Iam not sure if they came to it or not with my wife's hunt and we were there only 2 days so.......... Not really long enough to try it out for sure. Had my surgery shortly thereafter so have not had a chance to try it out anymore. Maybe it does work, most of the other Tink's products work so there is no reason this one should not.

I am on staff with Tinks 69 and have done alot of testing with this product as well as I am on staff with sow in heat both wonderful products and both do work! they are hog urine to put it bluntly. i use these products as a cover scent to be honest when going into an area i use a drag rasg soaked in the sow in heat or tinks power big either or its the same thing, i also pour 1 bottle of the urine into my automatic feeder mixed with the corn. my reasoning is you want the pigs to feel at home you want them to be comfortable and they feel comfortabkle when feeding. all the hog urine in the world wont do you any good if you dont go scent free or apre peeing smoking pooping within 1/2 mile of your hunting area hogs are real sensative to scent i routinely kill huge boars bowhunting only getting to within 15 yards of them i have a many more tips i will share

more on baits. here is some more advice on baits, there was a time and day when i used diesel when i used kresol and petroleum products. sure they worked and worked well but.... it is also not friendly to the enviroment. as i grow as an outdoorsman and hunter i now shy away from things that can impact the enviroment so i do my very best to use non hazourdous methods.
as many of you know hogs are a challenge and are difficult to figure out. that is what has driven my passion for over 20 years. hogs are getting smarter and every time we figure out the next best method of harvesting a hog they catch on to it. some adice ill give is to not be afraid to step out of the box try new things experiment some of the best hogs i have taken has been by stepping out of the normal. hogs are curious to some degree and will definately investigate a new smell dig bait holes use pig pipes use roll barrels etc one of the best attractants ive found is rice bran i mixed it 50-50 wioth corn i drilled 5/8 inch holes in the bottom of a 55 gallon drum put super heavy duty eye bolts in at the top of barrel and hoisted it 2 feet off the ground from the bottom you should here the sound of that drum being beat by the hogs they get on there hind feet and pound it with hoofs to get there reward
