Mule Footed Hogs

Have any of y'all ever heard of a "Mule Footed Hog" Ihave been talking with my crane operator up here in El Reno,Ok and he was telling me a a heard of hogs down around Lawton,Ok. This heard of hogs has been here for better than 50-60yrs and have a type of mule foot vs a split hoof. These, according to him are some of the original hogs brought into this country and have pretty much been left alone due to where they are located. They are in some of the thickest river bottoms around, so no one wants to go in after them. Gary I have actually seen two in my life down here where I live. The first was when I was about nine or ten and my Grandpa Zuniga and I were checking hog traps just South of the little town I grew up in (Charlotte) anyhow we had just pulled up and saw four hogs in the trap and were gonna cut and dock the boars and take the sows. But when we went up to the trap grandpa pointed out that the big one (120lbs) had patas de elefante or feet like an elephant but they werent really like an elephants they like that of a young Jack or Jenny. It was really neat as he nor I had ever seen one like that ever. So we let him go thinking he may pass on the genes and took care of the others. That was about 1979 or 78. Then in the mid eighties I was huntn in another county with my dogs and we actually caught a sow with Mule feet she was only about seventy five but she had the feet. I poked her and brought her to the house took pictures and everything and had the feet in the garage then I went into the service and mom cleaned house and the tornado hit the house in 2002 and destroyed pretty much everything. But yes they do exist.

Matter of fact I once saw a show where they killed another one in Florida and I believe it was the guys from Indian Archery Videos.

I read an article about them in an older Boar hunter Magizine once so I was aware that they exist but have never seen one.

i have seen 2 mule footed hogs caught in this area, 1 by dog hunters another by trap. word is that Goddard Ranch brought some in years ago from florida

I have seen three in the past 5 years. I buddy who traps hundred of hogs a year says he sees about 1 out of 500 hogs that are mule footed. I think it is a genetic thing that some hogs get it and others don't...even out of the same sow.

Have heard about them before, but never been able to harvest one. I wasof the mindset that it was a genetic deformity, not necessarily a trait which could be bred. Dunno. I guess if you had enough stock of anything, you could breed for that characteristic. Wish I could stumble across one one day.

googled them- evidently there is a breed of mulefooted hogs, articles said they were better table fare than domestic hogs, was even a site to register you mulefooted pigs

I did just that. They are actually a rarity and are prized for their hams. Brought to this country in the early 1900's. Who'd a thunk it?
