1. Just an FYI to everyone. This week, Dateline had this recall story about the safety problem and it affects every model 700 Remington made before 1982. 24 deaths and over 100 injuries are also associated with this problem. I also know a friend of mine rifle did in fact accidentally discharge one time where he shot a hole through the camp house and through one of the member’s trailers when he and I were hunting together. Had someone been inside that camp house at the time they may have been killed. The round was at head level as it passed through the house. He thought he done something wrong but swore the gun was on safety…turns out he was right. We both always questioned it till now. If you or someone you know has one of these rifles made before 1982 please get it fixed. You need to contact Remington and get it fixed even if your never going to use it again it must be fixed so no one gets killed with it. My brother-in-law also had a close call when he and I were hunting with his gun (Remington 700) as it accidentally discharged in my deer blind. Again we thought he just screwed up. He called Remington and they fixed it for him no questions asked. There are 5 million 700’s out there…I’m sure you know someone who has one so please pass this on. Safety Modification Program
Remington Model 700 & Model 40-X
If you own a Remington Model 700 or Model 40-X rifle:
Only those Model 700 or 40-X rifles made before March 1982 were manufactured with a bolt-lock mechanism. Model 700 or 40-X rifles made after March 1982 do not have a bolt-lock mechanism and may be loaded and unloaded with the safety in the “S” or “On Safe” position. Consequently, post-1982 Model 700 or 40-X rifles are not subject to this bolt-lock Safety Modification Program.
To determine whether your Model 700 or 40-X rifle has a bolt-lock mechanism, either:
• Call Remington toll-free at 1-877-387-6691 and a service representative will help you determine if your firearm has a bolt-lock mechanism, or
• Take your Model 700 or 40-X rifle to a Remington Authorized Repair Center and a qualified gunsmith will examine your firearm and determine whether it has a bolt-lock mechanism.
If your Model 700 or 40-X rifle has a bolt-lock mechanism, it is eligible for this bolt-lock Safety Modification Program. If you participate, your firearm will be cleaned and inspected for proper functioning by a qualified gunsmith. Once the condition of your firearm has been assessed, you will be notified of one of the following:
• Your firearm’s trigger assembly is otherwise in good operating condition, and the gunsmith will proceed to physically remove the bolt-lock feature so that your rifle can be loaded and unloaded while the safety remains in the “S” or “On Safe” position; or
• Your rifle’s trigger assembly is found to be in an unsatisfactory or potentially unsafe operating condition because of any number of factors, including wear, alteration or maintenance. The entire trigger assembly will be replaced with a new factory trigger assembly, which does not incorporate a bolt-lock mechanism.
In either case, the total cost to you is $20 plus shipping and handling. You will also receive a safety redemption certificate to complete and submit in order to receive a free blaze orange hat (one hat per certificate).
How to participate in the Safety Modification Program
Complete the General Repair Form and
Send or deliver your firearm and the completed repair form to either:
a) A Remington Authorized Repair Center; or
b) Ship your firearm to the Remington factory at:

The maker of the famous hunting rifle Remington Model 700-series has been combating a serious safety issue and reportedly stopped short of a nationwide recall of the models twice. A CNBC investigation and some closely guarded insider documents have revealed the secret of the company that did not inform the users about a safety issue for several years. Thousands of consumer complaints poured in but the company reportedly did not send proper information to the public. On the contrary it always insisted that the models were devoid of any manufacturing defects. A CNBC documentary named “Remington Under Fire: A CNBC Investigation” was shown yesterday on the network that left the viewers stunned.
More than 5 million units of the popular and highly acclaimed Remington Model 700-series rifle have been sold worldwide and the rifle is known for its precision and smooth trigger. It is much sought after by veteran hunters as well as military snipers and law enforcement officials in many countries. However as many as 75 lawsuits have been filed against the company and plenty of customer complaints are there as well. Over 24 deaths and 100 cases of injuries have also been linked with the rifle. The problem lies with the model’s trigger mechanism.
The Remington 700 series rifle’s origin can be traced back to the 1940s. The unique trigger system patented by the company has often drawn the flak of the critics. However, the company has maintained that the accidental cases of firing and injuries caused by them are mostly owing to lack of proper maintenance. However the documentary shows that Remington decided to recall in 1979 as well as 1994 but finally stepped back.
