When Cody called me on Tuesday, I thought he was nuts! He and Riley wanted to "blow off some steam" before they went back to Lubbock for the spring semester.....didn't they look at the weather forecast? The weatherman was forecasting a low of 18 with north winds from 15-25 mph. While 18 might seem balmy to someone up north, it's downright chilly for Central Texas....and it's not a dry cold either. We were just hoping that the hogs would "come out and play". Thursday came and the weatherman wasn't too far off....but we went anyway! We got an ealy start and were "goggles down and rolling" by dark. A little over an hour into the hunt Jed starts singing "P-I-G-G-O and Piggo was his name"......our first group of 7. The wind provided plenty of cover noise so it was an easy stalk to within 50 yards.... 3-2-1 BOOM! Three less rooters to worry about! After a quick round of pictures , we went off in search of more targets. Deer, cows, skunks, raccoons.....more deer, more cows...then cows and 6 more deer...WAIT...those deer don't have long necks! Sus Scrofa! (that's geek-speak for feral hogs). After another cold, windy frost-bitten stalk. Cody and Riley dropped the hammer on 3 more rooters! Two were DRT under a tree and the third one made it about 50 yards. Now there's two ways to move a pig fifty yards.....drag it or call Cody! You are DA MAN! One more round of pictures and we were back to the hunt. We hadn't gone very far and I noticed a black spot in the pasture. A quick look with the thermal scope confirmed it was Hot!....Then it got up! As it turns out, it was a fourth hog that had been wounded a few minutes earlier. One quick shot to put it down and the body count was up to 7! As the night wore on and the temperature dropped, we learned something about our video cameras.....it might not be too cold for Cody and Riley but the cameras had a mind of their own. We spotted a lone boar under the pecan trees and had started another stalk when the cameras displayed a "low temperature" error message. It took a few minutes to warm them up and, in the meantime, a group of cows spooked and that sent the boar packing. Sorry guys. We did manage to get some footage later of a coyote of the receiving end of a couple of .308 rounds.....Sweet! I thoroughly enjoyed hunting with these two guys. Their parents should be proud of themselves....they raised two fine young southern gentlemen. Not only are they enthusiastic and polite, they are both excellent marksmen. Come back soon guys!
